Skopelos Island the Ideal Destination

The Island of Harmony

General

Skopelos Island

Located 43 nautical miles from Volos, Skopelos, the largest of the Sporades islands, is also the capital of Sporades and historically the most important due to its wine-industry based economy. Far less cosmopolitan than Skiathos, Skopelos is mainly comprised of fertile plains. "Chora", the main town of Skopelos, with its tiered architecture ascending up the hills from the port, its cobblestone alleys and many Byzantine churches is considered to be one of the prettiest harbour towns in Greece. Numerous bars and restaurants serving fine meals line the picturesque harbour. A stroll to the top of the town takes visitors to the ruins of the Venetian Castle. Glossa, the island's second town, is a winding three kilometres up the hill from Loutraki, the small thin-pebbled-beach port. The nightclub scene on the island is present, but it can be easily avoided by peace-seeking travellers. Most of the island's numerous beaches are along the southwestern coast, some sandy, some pebbled, and they can be reached by bus or boat. The island is the perfect destination for off-road cyclists. A multitude of rugged tracks and trails can be found in its interior, winding through tiny picturesque hamlets and peaceful country chapels. The soft hills and valleys are planted with almond, plum, walnut, chestnut and olive trees growing among numerous water springs. There are frequent ferry and hydrofoil runs connecting Skopelos with Volos, Aghios Constantinos, Alonissos and Skiathos.
