The Peloponnesian Folklore Foundation was founded in 1974 by Ioanna Papantoniou, a well known stage and costume designer, with a desire to study and promote the culture of modern Greece. The multifaceted cultural contribution of the foundation was honoured with the European Museum of the Year Award in 1981. The Folklore Museum of Nafplion, one of the most complete in Greece, is housed in a beautiful two-storey building in the old quarters of the town. The fully renovated halls since 1999 provide the venue for collection titled "The best of the Pelopponesian Folklore Foundation", featuring exhibits selected out of 25,000 objects in 22 categories in the ownership of this pioneering unit. The museum collection includes traditional costumes, wood-carved furnishings, jewels, ecclesiastical items, looms, woven materials, arms and a large number of vessels of daily use.
