Housing the masterpieces of Prehistoric Thera, the Museum was inaugurated in Spring 2000. Covering an area of 600 square metres modeled with an eye on modern museum design, the second floor of the museum building, houses four thematic units with exhibits from Akrotiri and other locations in Santorini, dating from the Early Neolithic Era (5th millenium BC) through the 17th century AD. The internationally renowned collection of the Museum includes urns, figurines, bronze vessels, the plaster casts of furnishings and naturally, the Akrotiri frescoes, the best preserved samples of ancient Greek painting.
